Lawn Aeration is one of the most important things to do in order to help
your lawn achieve its full potential. We have done the research
for you, and here's what you should know...
- Your yard needs aeration at least twice annually.
More as needed
- Aerators with prongs or spikes compress the soil
which is less desirable than your major objective to loosen the soil
and enable the air to get down into the roots
- The most effective lawn aeration occurs with core
aeration or plug aeration where tines reach down into the soil and
remove plugs of earth and deposit them on top of the soil so the soil
becomes loosened and holes are made where air and water can reach down
beneath the surface to the grass roots
- Core Aerator tines reach down into the soil, remove
a core of dirt and deposit the loose dirt on top of the yard, so the
next rain or a light raking will help them disintegrate
- Holes created by core aerators allow air down into
the soil at the root level where the air is badly needed
- Holes created by core aeration help retain rain
water so it does not run off and cause erosion
- Use a core aerator before seeding and before
overseeding for an incredible lawn
- Crabgrass? Use a core aerator and overseed
- Lawn drying up? Aerate and apply water
- Grass thinning out? Aerate, apply seed,
fertilizer and water
- Without core aeration, your desired lawn quality
will not be fully realized
Knowing that core aeration achieves the best
results, what are your options for CORE AERATION??? Here's several
suggestions...
- Hire a lawn service - Easy but Expensive
If your yard
is a typical size of about 1/2 acre you will probably need to pay
about $300 per treatment, twice per year for a great lawn. Imagine
paying this twice per year, year after near! In just 5 years
time this adds up to $3,000.00! Not advisable for a family on a
budget.
- Rent a Core Aerator from Lowes, Home Depot, etc.
- Need Trailer and Time, and still Expensive
This can cost
upwards of $80 to $100 each time you want to aerator your lawn. Plus,
you'd better have a trailer and a strong back to collect and return
the equipment. Not to mention the time required for picking up,
cleaning and returning the equipment. Time is money. Depending on how
you value time, option #1 may actually be less expensive.

Hope it Works, and still Expensive
There are
folks including lawn care services willing to part with used aerators,
but even those often sell for $2,000+ if they are in good shape. And
then you have someone else's used equipment which may or may not be
all you want it to be. Keep in mind that there may be a reason
someone is selling their aerator, and if you purchase it you may be
paying to take their problem off their hands.
